Cipes and The People

I first heard Cipes on the MTV reality show, Twnetyfourseven. The show was terrible... absolutely terrible but at least I found Cipes right?

I would describe Cipes and The People as california pseudo reggae/surf. Lots of positive messages and just really good listening music.

Check out Free Me

I know this song has a lot of cliche plagarized phrases but it's still good listening right?

Lauryn Hill- Mystery of Inequity

Whatever happened to music with good lyrics? I mean, not all music needs to have amazing lyrics. A lot of pop music relies on good production. But look at the success of commercial pop groups and compare it to the success of underground rock and hip-hop groups. Isn't it odd that "commercial" music is usually associated with non-artistic qualities?

I own so much music, although I really favor certain albums. When scrolling through my ipod, I always seem to discover entire albums that I've never really listened to before. This weekend, while scrolling, I came back in touch with an old favorite. I really love Lauryn Hill's "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill." Her voice sounds so vulnerable, yet it resonates with such powerful and moving lyrics.

A few years ago, my mother bought me Lauryn Hill's MTV Unplugged...and it's really a great album. I highly suggest buying it. Anyway, this is one of my favorite songs from the album and I found the actual live recording so- enjoy. This song may sound a little familiar (Kanye West- All Falls Down)

Donavan Frankenreiter

This past summer at Bonnaroo, I was wandering around lost and accidentally walked backstage and saw FUSE TV following this man around. Being the natural follower that I am, I too, decided to follow this man and see what all the hype was around. During the course of this interview, I found out that this man was Donavan Frankenreiter. I had heard Frankenreiter's music from a friend before, and I thought he was quite good, but never really looked much into it. Therefore, I had no idea that the man I was following was Donavan Frankenreiter.

Anyway, you should definitely check him out. He's very good- a mix of blues, rock and a little soul, I suppose. If you like Jack Johnson and John Mayer, do yourself a favor and check out Donavan. I highly suggest checking out one of his official videos, but youtube sucks and they're embedded, so I am posting a live video.

Donavan is currently on an International Tour and although he has a few dates in the US, I haven't seen any in the East Coast :(
But I promise you, you'll like him so check him out if he's in your town.

Note that Mr. Morrison has dates February second, fourth, and fifth. I can offer two explanations as to why he skipped February third:

1) My Birthday is February 3rd and if you know me at all, you know I love RENT. RENT closed this summer and the cast is going on a final national tour and they will be in Philadelphia on my birthday, February 3rd. Had Mr. Morrison planned to perform that night, he knew that I would not be able to attend the show

2) The more likely reason is as follows: About two years ago, I met Mr. Morrison (see picture above). During our meeting, I was informed that he loved me. Now, it seems most likely, that Mr. Morrison chose not to perform on February 3rd, so that he could spend that time with me.

Either way the week of my 20th birthday, I get to see JAMES AND RENT. I encourage you to buy tickets to both performances if they come to your neighborhood

The Bad Plus

It's been a long time. Blame Penn. But I have not forgotten muse sickly challenged. I've found tons of new artists BUT- forgetful me left my list at school. There are some bands that I've been meaning to write about for a while though. One is The Bad Plus.

The Bad Plus is not a new band. They've been around since 2000. But I had not heard of them until 2006. The Bad Plus is a jazz band that plays a ton of rock and pop covers (including Neil Young, Nirvana, Black Sabbath, and Blondie). Crazy, right?

Their latest album, "For All I Care" is set to release in America in February 2009, although it has already been released in Europe. The new album includes covers of songs by Nirvana, Wilco, The Flaming Lips, Pink Floyd, and The Bee Gees, just to name a few. Before listening, you should note that The Bad Plus is still for Jazz fans- but young jazz fans. You can't listen to their version of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and expect to hear Nirvana. Anyway, Here's a clip from The Bad Plus film...check it out

The Bad Plus (Aphex Twin Cover)

Want to see The Bad Plus? Check out their remaining tour dates in MN, NY, and MO on their website.

Like A Star- Corinne Bailey Rae

The recently widowed, Corinne Bailey Rae is a very touching musician. Like many of my favorite female artists, Rae benefits from using the fragility of her voice to command the utmost power. It's almost as if the soft nature of their voice, makes you listen that much harder and in doing so, you realize the gravity of their message.

A part of the new feminized "British Invasion," which includes songstresses Duffy and Amy Winehouse, Bailey is putting her mark on the world.

Marc Broussard

There is an insane amount of talent coming out of the south in the singer/songwriter genre. More specifically, the TN, GA area has really been impressing me over the past few years. From Dave Barnes to James David Carter and Matt Wertz...it's truly an impressive scene. Well, another southern beau, Marc Broussard, has decided to take his act on the road.

Marc is actually from Louisiana. Fusing funk, blues, and rock, his music is pretty spectacular. So why is Marc today's artist of the day? Well, I have a treat for you locals. Tomorrow Marc will be performing in Philadelphia not once but twice! Check him out at the Broad Street FYE at 5:30 AND at the TLA at 7:00. I highly recommend getting out to see one, if not both, performances.

In honor of the chilly weather we have here in Philly, today's song of the day is "Come in from the Cold"

A Change is Gonna Come

Gavin Degraw's "Chariot Stripped" album is quite amazing. If you haven't heard of the Stripped series, please check it out. Basically, they take CD's which have already been produced, and bring the artist in to do a live, acoustic, in-studio recording. Now, I have Gavin DeGraw Chariot, and Gavin DeGraw Chariot Stripped and oh the difference!

Chariot has some good songwriting but it's a little too poppy for me. But Chariot Stripped is fantastic- I really suggest checking it out. So not only are the songs better but there's a bonus track. Gavin DeGraw covers Sam Cooke's A Change is Gonna Come and it's beautiful. I've gone back and fourth with my mother, who is my elder about who has a better version.

My mother, of course, likes Cooke's version the best because it is undoubtedly more personal and it's the original. However, I tend to favor DeGraw's simply because it seems to have more emotion and passion. The fragility of his voice is so incredibly moving. I know everyone is going to abandon me on the following point but- I think Cooke's version is more music for music sake, whereas DeGraw's is music as an emotional release, which for me is always more moving. Of course I am biased, but who isnt? Here, is a comparison of the two:

The Blue Method

I have a hatred for genres because simple genres like "indie" don't tell you anything about the artist. But more complex genres like "techno-bluegrass-hip-hop fusion" just seem to be a marketing ploy that winds up confusing you as well.

Now, for today's Song of the Day, a hybrid genre is necessary. The Blue Method are a self-proclaimed "jersadelphia" jam band. They fuse rock, blues, funk and soul to make a sound that's pretty spectacular. They're one of those bands that you just can't dislike.

God Make Me Funky

I suggest checking out their myspace to hear their variety

He Can Only Hold Her If They Slow Dance

I've owned Amy Winehouse's Back to Black since it came out but I never really got the chance to listen to the album. But, in honor of Halloween, I decided to give it a listen. Immediately, "He Can Only Hold Her" became my favorite track but when I gave it a closer listen, I found something pretty interesting.

I think the reason I like "He Can Only Hold Her" so much is because it is strikingly similar to John Legend's "Slow Dance"

Have a listen for yourself.

John Legend- Slow Dance (listen from the beginning to :27 seconds)

Amy Winehouse- He Can Only Hold Her (listen from :42 seconds- 1:03)

Dave Barnes Part Two! or Six...Or Whatever We're Up To Now

I have recently considered turning Muse Sickly Challenged into a blog (or shrine, if you will) devoted to Dave Barnes. But after speaking with my associates (the voices inside my head), I decided that it would be best to keep it a blog about all music. However, I must update you on my latest run in with- you guessed it- DAVE BARNES!

So, I decided to work the merch table at Dave Barnes' show last night. It seemed like a fair deal- sit at the merch table, watch the show for free- so I did it.

After Sir Barnes' set, which was wonderfully executed, he had a little meet and greet. Since there were an abundance of girls swarming my man, I took that time to purchase my "I heart Dave Barnes" t-shirt, which is very nice, I suggest buying one of your own. So then, after the line died down, I came face to face with DB for the second time and the first words out of his mouth were:

"that interview was right on time"

That's right! Dave Barnes remembered Ashley Bradley from earlier this summer. One of the better days of my life..because of that and oh yeah, because the Phillies won the WORLD SERIES!

Oh and for those of you who still haven't checked out Dave Barnes, watch this video- it sums up his latest album

Don't Look Down

For the long time supporters of Muse Sickly Challenged, you know that I love singer-songwriters. David Ryan Harris has been popping up all over the singer-songwriter world for the past couple of years, but it seems like it's still relatively unknown. I first heard of Harris through the ill-famed myspace "music networking" site. Two of my favorite singer-songwriters, Dave Barnes and John Mayer, both had David Ryan Harris on their top friends so I figured he must be pretty legit and low and behold- that he is!

As far as sound- many singer-songwriters sound alike, but there are acute details that make them appeal to different people. I guess DRH is like a fusion between John Mayer and Marvin Gaye (more of Mayer, for this song). Harris, in fact, performed with Mayer and Barnes, abroad the 2008 Mayercraft Carier.

Dying is Fine- Ra Ra Riot

Ra Ra Riot is a six-piece band from Syracuse New York. "Green" at heart, they have taken to attaching bikes to their tour bus, and wheeling around cities to avoid pollution and high gas prices. This video, for Dying is Fine, is a little trippy but I think it's quite cool.

New Music

I know I've been pretty lame as far as updating my blog is concerned but I've been busy. But I have found a few new artists which hopefully I will get up here soon. Last night at First Unitarian Church was the Black Kids and The Virgins concert. In honor of said groups, since I have mentioned Black Kids a lot, Song of the Day goes to The Virgins. I love the old school- yet new school vibe of this song- it's like The Delta Spirit meets KC and the Sunshine Band.

The Virgins- Rich Girl

England, You Had Your Chance- Today is ours!

That's right! I woke up yesterday at 8 AM to buy Songs For You, Truths For Me, only to find out that it had not been released in the US yet. If you think about it, it kinda makes sense, as in the US, new music is released on Tuesday but anyway. It's out today! And I just purchased it and I love it already, despite the fact that it received mediocre reviews. One song, Broken Strings, is due to be released as a single around Christmas time and features the unlikely combination of James Morrison and Nelly Furtado. Check out this album!

The Gossip

This is not a gossip blog but I can't help myself.

Clay Aiken came out of the closet today. I know, you know, and finally he knows that he is gay. But, the American Idol winner claims that he came out of the closet for the sake of his new born baby. I would just like to point out that the child does not yet know the difference between gay and straight. Also, Clay, why come out of the closet AFTER knockin up yo baby's mama (Jaymes, that's right Jaymes Foster). Last comments on Clay Aiken- I just find this somewhat humorous. I have a friend, who is a lesbian, and after coming out of the closet, she began a new look which was striking similar to Clay Aiken's new look circa '06. I would like to show you how freaky these pictures are, for comparison, but I also want to respect her privacy, so I shall not- but it's crazy!

Next. Also to come out of the closet today was Lindsay Lohan. Yet again, no surprise there. She's been all over this chick for months now. This news, not so interesting.

Lastly on my list of strange things happening in Hollywood is that Jennifer Hudson (American Idol reject but Dreamgirls success) is engaged to Punk from the TV show I Love New York. Now, Jennifer, you know you can do better than marrying someone who was head over heels for New York. But on the topic of gay celebrities...I am not so sure that Punk is straight. Perhaps he will come out of the closet after their first baby.

Speaking of Clay Aiken, this is perhaps the best clip....ever

Note that he's covering Elton John.

Baby, It's Cold Outside

I picked this song for two reasons
1) My super-cool Communications professor, tends to play music in class and when he played this song I remembered just how classic it is
2) It's freaking cold for September. I am shivering in my dorm room. One might suggest turning off the air conditioning, but this city is too loud and I prefer the sound of the air conditioning to obnoxiously drunk 18 year olds and ambulance sirens. But even outside, where the air conditioner is not, it is freezing!...Anyway, I digress.

For those in my Comm class, it is important to note that this rendition (as with the one that Turow played), is not by Ray Charles and Nina Simone, but rather by Ray Charles and Betty Carter.

Now, I can't find a live recording, but this will have to do.

Ps: if you haven't seen the movie, Ray, with Jamie Foxx, you should really check it out- it's an excellent movie.

Pistol For Ringo

I'm not going to ponder a guess as to what their name means, but a good old google search led me to this- which left me even more confused than I was originally. But regardless, you should check these guys out. Featuring one of my Philly faves, Ben Arnold, Pistol for Ringo formed as a collective, this summer, in sunny LA. Their sound is pretty sweet- it's like surf/indie/blues rock. I hate genres. I also hate when people fuse genres because that makes it even more confusing, but I'm sorry I had to do it. I guess you could call it simple feel good music, but Arnolds voice, as always, delivers that raw, raspy sentiment that touches your soul.

Now, I have just realized, through the wonderful aid of google analytics, that my blog readership is pretty international, so I should stop speaking strictly about Philadelphia events. So, for your West- Coasters, this is for you!

This fall, Pistol for Ringo will be playing on the West Coast, namely California and Nevada. I would seriously check them out, if you get the chance. For everyone else, their 4 song EP will be relased on iTunes October 8th.

Not the Same

I told you about this event a while ago but last week, Ben Folds performed with members of the Philadelphia Chamber Orchestra at the Mann Center. Epic, I know. For those of you who missed, here is a sample of the amazing evening:

Unfortunately, the quality sucks and as you can imagine it was "Not the Same" live, but soo much better.

Philly Phriday, son! So, I love this song, even though it's mad old. But it definitely deserves to be a Philly Phrday- especially given the Philadelphia paraphernalia.

The Kooks come to Penn

I am not sure if this is supposed to be a surprise or not, but I figure, their probably aren't that many people from Penn who read this- so I am going to go for it.

The Kooks are performing at the Electric Factory on Monday- but prior to that performance, they will be on Penn's College Green, busking. One may ask what busking is and I have a credible answer for you via wikipedia.

"Busking is the practice of performing in public places for tips and gratuities. People engaging in this practice are called buskers. "

I think the Kooks are very good. I guess they're your typical British Indie Rock band, but I really like their sound. So, if you're in the area, go to College Green circa 1pm.

Naive- The Kooks

Pump Up Music

This morning, I found out I made the Women's Club Soccer team at Penn, to much of my surprise. When I heard the news, I heard this song in my head:

Cheesy, yes, but that song gets me going. I then realized, it's been two years since I have played soccer, so my warm up music is a bit dated. My current warm up playlist includes:

  1. Disco Inferno- 50 Cent
  2. Where's Your Head At- Basement Jaxx
  3. Roc the Mic- Beanie Sigel & Freeway (Philly!)
  4. Touch It- Busta Rhymes, Missy Elliott, Mary J, Rah Digga
  5. Come to Me- Diddy
  6. Faint- Linkin Park
  7. Money Maker- Ludacris
  8. Breathe, Stretch, Shake - Mase
  9. Lights, Camera, Action- Diddy/ Mr. Cheeks
  10. Make it Rain- Fat Joe
  11. Eye of the Tiger- Survivor

Needless to say, I am going to need a new playlist for this season.

I Told Jay I Did a Song With Coldplay

On Kanye West's tribute (?) to Jay-Z, "Big Brother", he recites the line, "I told Jay I did a song with Coldplay/ next thing I know he got a song with Coldplay/ Back of my mind I'm like 'Damn, no way,'/ translate Espanol, 'No way, Jose.'" Now, this song in general confuses me because I don't understand if Kanye West is praising Jay-Z or at times insulting his integrity. I am leaning toward the former but check out the lyrics and you decide for yourself (and don't cheat using song meanings)

The other thing that confused me about this song is that I didn't recall Jay-Z or Kanye West doing a song with Coldplay so I did a little further investigation and found the following:

The song that Kanye West is referring to is not actually a song with Coldplay, but rather "Homecoming," featuring Chris Martin of Coldplay. I have the CD but I never bothered to look at the cover art (because I don't particularly like Kanye West, the person, too much). So, I never knew that this was Christ Martin. Anyway, here's the music video- seeing the two of them on camera is kind of interesting, but I think the video and song are quite good (note Chris Martin's hand dancing, as seen on Viva La Vida):

Now, for Jay-Z's song with Coldplay, that took a bit more work, because I had actually never heard the song before. But, the song is "Beach Chair," also featuring Chris Martin, not the whole band. This is not the official video, but here's the song:

Stylistically and musically, I like Jay-Z and Kanye West equally. Personality wise, I like Jay-Z a lot more than Kanye West. But when it comes to their songs featuring Chris Martin, I think Kanye's is best. So, Homecoming is Song of the Day.

Motivation- Delta Spirit

I first heard Delta Spirit this summer, while working at XPN. They're a pretty sweet band, I think, and very catchy. Song of the Day is "Motivation" by Delta Spirit. The video is quite strange, especially at the end.

If you like what you heard, check them out October 23rd at Johnny Brenda's.

Sunshine of Your Life

I've been familiar with this song for quite a while now- mostly because my mom is a hippie. But, it's on Guitar Hero III Legends of Rock. And, I am pretty amazing at that game (on easy) so I've had it stuck in my head all day sooooo I made i song of the day.

Australian Music

In the past few days I have been thinking immensely about where I want to study abroad. Due to the fact that the only languages I ever studied are now "dead" (although, Dr. Henry V. Bender would disagree), I am stuck going to an English-speaking country. In reality, most countries speak English and I think I should be rewarded with the opportunity to study wherever I like, but Penn seems to disagree with me. I thought England- but I would only want to be in London- and I've been there before and I didn't think it was all that great. Scotland and New Zealand were always pretty much out of the question and I finally decided on Australia. Where in Australia you may ask? Melbourne!

So, I've been thinking about how I will acclimate to a new country and of course the music of the country was going to be pretty important. I know American music is all around the world, but I wanted to know more about the music of that country. So I sat down to make a list of music I knew from Australia and came up with the following:

  1. Yothu Yindi
I studied them last year and I think they're actually pretty sweet but slightly dated. So, I headed to good old Wikipedia and extended my list to include:

  1. AC/DC
  2. Savage Garden
  3. The Bee Gees (sort of)
  4. The Loved Ones (Melbourne!)
The List is much more extensive, but these are really the only people I knew, so forgive me Aussies. When I return, I will know more about your music, I promise.

So, in honor of my hopeful study abroad location, as well as the handful of international readers of my blog, today's song of the day will be......

Back In Black- AC/DC

It was a difficult decision, but 90's pop week wasn't too long ago and I don't want you to hate me too much. I do love Savage Garden though.

Army- Ben Folds

I know I haven't done Song of the Day in more than a week...but whatever, I am back (for now anyway). Maybe during the school year we should switch to song of the week. Anywho, I really enjoy this song. It's the second SOD (you like that?) by Ben Folds but what can I say, he deserves it. I would not consider myself a big Ben Folds fan by any means but I have seen him perform twice, and he is quite good. So, SOD is Army by Ben Folds. Oh, and speaking of Mr. Folds, he will be performing at The Mann Music Center on September 6th, with the Philadelphia Orchestra. Tickets are sold out, I believe, but that's pretty sweet.

Come See The Hustle

I love this band. I went to a show about a month ago with a friend and we were discussing the awesomeness of The Hustle. They somehow appeal to all audiences and upon further reflection, we realized that there really is nothing bad to say about them. Some cynics claim that hip-hop isn't "real music" (whatever that means), but they also have a sick vocalist. Plus, they play their own instruments. So chill let's just face it, you can't knock The Hustle.

So- now that I have hopefully convinced you, you should come see The Hustle live, tomorrow in Rittenhouse...FOR FREE! Yes, free music- doesn't get much better than that. See you there!

Also, pick up their EP, 4,5,6

Rihanna- Please Don't Stop the Music

I'm not going to say much about this song- it's probably one of the best songs to play for those private dance parties you have in your room when no one is around (or is that just me). You all know it. But I do have one thing to say about Rihanna. I do respect her. Her music is very catchy blah blah- she's a good pop singer (average voice+ synths+ good production+ catchy lyrics + hot = good pop singer). But I am against the decision to release Good Girl Gone Bad Reloaded. I don't think albums should be "re-issued." You should give all that you've got to the album and once it's done- it's done. If you have new ideas, put them on your next CD. Okay. I'm Sleepy. Goodnight.

Please Don't Stop the Music - Rihanna

Terrence Howard is on my Kanye List

As the title implies, Terrence Howard has been moved to my black list (and not because of the color of his skin). Now, originally this show was at the TLA, but through some research of my own, I found out yesterday that the show had been moved to the Lux Lounge although no notification was sent to ticket holders. So, I head on down to the Lux Lounge tonight at 9:15 (doors opened at 9) only to find that the show had been canceled. So not only did he switch venues last minute, but he also canceled the show extremely last minute. Even worse- the Lux Lounge is in center city (near The Gallery) and parking is ridiculous and I spent all of two minutes in the parking lot and paid $12. For two minutes! WTF Philadelphia!

So, I did not see Terrence Howard tonight. I am not upset about the fact that I didn't see him. As I said, he's not bad but I'm not saying he's that good either. He may be an A-list actor but he is a D-list singer...so let's not get too carried away here. At the end of the day, I evaluated the money lost from the concert and it comes out as follows.

ticket cost : $35 x 2 = $70
processing fee: $6 x2 = $12
parking: $12
gas: $6
frustration: priceless
------------------------
Total: $100

And so, like the dried out hippie at Bonnaroo who wanted his $14 dollars back for Kanye's Diva moment, I want my $100 back. Granted, I will get at least $70 back- but I think Terrence Howard and friends owe me that additional $30, as well. I don't know the reason that the show was canceled but I think it was handled very improperly. There weren't even signs that said that it was canceled. I waited in line until I finally got to a bouncer who told me the show was off. If anyone Terrence Howard related reads this blog, please take this from my rant- in the words of Pearl, "I Want My Money Bitch"

Terrence Howard

My mom got me tickets to see Terrence Howard at Lux Lounge tonight. My reaction: Terrence Howard sings? Oh yes, he does. Also little known fact about Mr. Howard- he lives in the Suburbs of Philadelphia. So the question remains, is he good? Many actors consider themselves to be triple threats. Terrence Howard isn't bad. I give him credit for stepping outside of his role as an actor and for actually playing his own instruments (guitar and piano). His sound is your typical R&B at times but with a personal flair.I haven't seen him live nor have I heard much of his music but here's a little sample.

Sanctuary- Terrence Howard

His first album, Shine Through It, comes out September 2nd on Columbia Records and features a collaboration with Chris Brown (ugh).

James Morrison "Songs For You, Truths For Me"

I love James Morrison. It's not really a confession because I am rather open with it. And and I can safely say that no matter who I may be with at the time or how serious our relationship is, I will leave them at any point for James, if the opportunity presents itself (which it kind of did last summer). Now, I was a little frustrated at first because it took Mr. Morrison quite a long time to release his follow up to his 2006 debut, Undiscovered. I guess 2 years isn't that long, but I've been loving his music for so long that it seems like an eternity. Again, I digress-- the point of this post is that James Morrison will be releasing his new album, Songs For You, Truths For Me, on September 9, 2008!

I know that sophomore albums are usually sketchy but I have heard a bit of this album and it sounds good so far. I may be slightly bias, but trust me on this. Here's the first single...I never said he was so good at music videos:

James Morrison- You Make It Real

Although it took him a while to come out with a new CD (or it lease it seemed like a while for me), he succeeds because his talent doesn't lie specifically in his songwriting. Let's be real- he's a 20-something singer/songwriter- if he writes about love, he'll be fine. The true key to Morrison's success is his voice (which interestingly enough was acquired from a near fatal encounter with whopping cough as a child). I am very excited for Songs For You, Truths For Me. I highly recommend purchasing this album when it comes out.

Brianna Taylor

I will admit it, I am a closet Real World watcher. Certainly, the seasons have become tragically worse over time, but I thought this season was actually pretty good. I had a little crush on Will, until he turned out to be a slut. Joey was adorable and I think he's the cutest person in the world. Brianna had an annoying voice but she's from Philly- so she's cool in my book. Throughout this season, I fell in love with her character because, to me, she represented all that Philadelphia is about. Sure, she was one hell of a fighter, but in the end, she was a sweetheart and embodied the sometimes hard to find brotherly love of the city.

Everyone on the Real World Hollywood cast was trying to be discovered in one way or another. To be honest, most of them weren't too talented. Dave was funny but he's no improv master, Sarah (despite her education) sucked at broadcast journalism...the list really goes on but Philly girl Brianna Taylor was one exception. Will was so focused on his music and while Brianna was there, she really had too much drama going on to dedicate herself to music but when the time finally came for her to perform, she blew everyone away.

Story of My Life- Brianna Taylor

This song is a little pitchy, I think...but check out Summertime.

I agree with Brianna, some people need to do what they need to do to make money- to be honest, it's part of city life. If she is an exotic dancer, I see nothing wrong with that, really. But, with a voice like hers, I don't think she'll have to continue dancing to pay the bills (although that would make for an interesting stage performance).

Check out Brianna on October 26th, at the Tin Angel

90's Pop Week: Nsync is Here to Make You People Scream

Nostalgia:

For those of you who don't know me, 'Nsync is by far my favorite 90's Pop act. When I was probably 12-16, I had an entire room, in my house, dedicated to 'Nsync...an extended shrine if you will. We had an open room so I put all of my 'Nsync stuff in there. I am talking an 'Nsync bouncy ball, chair, the 6' Marionettes that I waited in line at 4 am in NYC for, concert tickets, bobble heads, pictures...the list really goes on. One day when I returned from boarding school (Hill Dear Old Hill), I found that my mother had packed my shrine away in boxes to turn the room into......my cat's room! What?! Yes, my cat has a room- but beyond that, why is his room my former 'Nsync shrine. That was one of the toughest days of my life.

A few years later, I got word from the official 'Nsync fan club that Joey Fatone would be in a production of RENT. At
that point, I only knew that RENT was a Broadway play but if Joey Fatone was going to be in it, Ashley Bradley was going to see it. So, I got tickets for the show (he was pretty sweet) and at the end of the performance they announced that he would be signing autographs! What?! So yes, I met Joey Fatone, the picture is in my room now (as a part of my mini shrine)...I will have to scan it one day.

Another good 'Nsync moment: Remember the move On The Line? That was the best movie ever...I don't care what you say. I own it and still watch it, to this day.
I used to have an "'Nsync" lecture, in which I went through their entire history...and get this, people paid to hear it. I know, I was a crazy young child but now onto some 'Nsync content I don't even know how to begin...maybe we'll start with the discography
  1. 'Nsync (Germany- yes, it's a different CD and I have the import)
  2. *Nsync (USA)
  3. Home For Christmas (This seriously never gets old!!!)
  4. The Winter Album (waste of money)
  5. No Strings Attached
  6. Celebrity
After the break: Justified (Justin), Schizophrenia ( JC), Future Sex/ Love Sounds (Justin) I know I am a little bias, but I truly feel that all of these CD's (including the solo releases) were amazing, with the exception of The Winter Album. It's not that The Winter album is particularly bad, it's just that it has no new songs...so what's the point?

Now, I found it funny how much
'Nsync's lyrics had changed by their last album, Celebrity. Sure, they were semi sexual before, on songs such as Digital Getdown (yes, a song about Cyber Sex). But Celebrity took things to a whole new level- not only were they more sexual, but they also became thugs in the process:

"If I didn't have cheese like everyday"
"The Ice around my neck"
"You know we don't care at all- let me see you up against the wall"
"We started grindin' shorty had me up against the wall/ Ask me about tomorrow you know that I don't care at all"

I really feel like I can't make an 'Nsync playlist because I really like all of their music so it would be like 80 songs long. So instead, I am making two 'Nsync Essentials Lists. One of singles and one of my favorite songs that didn't make the radio

Singles Essentials:
  1. Tearin' Up My Heart
  2. Here We Go
  3. God Must Have Spent A Little More Time On You (my first slow dance)
  4. I Want You Back
  5. Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays....haha PLEASE watch this video here sooo low budget, plus Gary Coleman
  6. Bye Bye Bye (reminds me of middle school dances)
  7. It's Gonna Be Me
  8. This I Promise You
  9. Pop
  10. Girlfriend
  11. Gone
Ashley's Essentials:
  1. For The Girl Who Has Everything
  2. Best of My Life
  3. Crazy For You
  4. Love's In Our Hearts On Christmas Day
  5. Kiss Me At Midnight
  6. I Never Knew The Meaning Of Christmas
  7. It Makes Me Ill
  8. No Strings Attached
  9. I Thought She Knew
  10. Celebrity
  11. The Two Of Us
  12. Something Like You (one of my many wedding songs)
  13. Selfish
Before (1997)

After (2001)
And Now, my favorite 'Nsync Music Video: I Drive Myself Crazy

Well, not quite- but it is pretty funny. If the video itself wasn't ridiculous enough, check the hair and acting...oh, good times

And, if you check at 2:41, you should have known Lance as gay all along. That brings me to another story...Approx 1999, I told everyone that Lance was gay...and that means a lot coming from an 'Nsync fan but no one believed me...

Alright...that wasn't the best evidence that they were a good group, so now for a more respectable video. I really do think this was one of the best pop videos of the 90's. The dance was sweet, and the video itself was pretty high quality (compared to Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays , at least)

90's Pop Week: It's Britney Bitch

I really don't need to say much about Britney Spears. Her early teen years have been erased in America's memory by her recent craziness. Between driving with her child on her lap and shaving her head and threating reporters with an umbrella, Spears needs to be hit more than One More Time. And now, a photo montage:
Playlist
  1. ...Baby One More Time
  2. (You Drive Me) Crazy
  3. Sometimes
  4. Lucky
  5. From the Bottom of my Broken Heart
  6. Oops! I did it Again
  7. Stronger
  8. Don't Let Me Be The Last to Know
  9. Let Me Be
  10. I'm a Slave 4 U
  11. I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman
  12. Me Against The Music
  13. Everytime
  14. Toxic
  15. Gimme More

Damn...she may be a psycho...but she's got quite the list of hits.

90's Pop Week: SoulDecision

Most of you probably don't remember soulDecision...most of you probably don't even know who they are but I loved this group so I don't care what you have to say. If the name sounds familiar, it's probably from their one hit wonder-Faded. God, what a great song! I remember when I saw them live, they did this cute little gig, to that song. Anyway. So, I have a great story about Soul Decision. The morning before my first Nsync concert, I had gone to King of Prussia to buy CD's. Crazy idea isn't it- going to a store to buy a CD! I was pumped to finally get the soulDecision CD because I loved Faded and I thought that little rap was so dope (now I realize, that was not a rap at all, I was just extremely sheltered). So, I pick up their self-titled debut and before I know it, I know all of the lyrics to call the songs.

To make things better, soulDecision, along with Eden's Crush (remember them!?) was opening for Nsync! God- it was so great until people started booing them off stage and they ended their set early...harsh crowd. I was so angry.

When I began listening to soulDecision again this week, I realized how dirty their songs were. I had nooo idea that Faded was about trying to get with a girl when you're drunk. I don't think I even knew what Faded meant back then. But check out the lyrics here...not what you thought when you were 12, huh? There debut CD was called No One Does it Better, and their follow up (which sucked) was entitled, Shady Satin Drug (what?).

Another funny story: Shady Satin Drug was such a flop that is only sold about ten thousand records, despite the fact that it cost 5.4 million to make. The failure of Shady Satin Drug caused the band's label to go bankrupt.

Playlist
  1. Faded
  2. 0o0 It's Kinda Crazy
  3. Gravity
  4. Stay
  5. Next Time
  6. I Don't Need Anyone
  7. Only In My Mind (about being a stalker- one of my faves)
Faded This video makes no sense but Trevor is so seductive...and sexual....I like

90's Pop Week: Christina Aguilera

As with Ricky Martin, it wasn't until I began listening to Xtina again that I remembered why she was so great. Now, I know some people will be upset with me for saying this, but of all of the 90's pop acts, I think Christina is the only one with raw talent. As a matter of fact, when I found younger, I listened to Christina, but I can't say that I was really a fan. But, as I have been listening to 90's pop the last week, she has surfaced as one of my favorites. Remember that Lady Marmalade video song? Craziness. Anyway...let's get to the good stuff.

Despite the longevity of her career, Aguilera only released three studio albums: Christina Aguilera (1999), Stripped (2002), Back to Basics (2006). Over the course of these albums, her look has changed drastically, as noted in the album covers below.

Christina Aguilera

Stripped

Back to Basics

Like fellow 90's sweethearts Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears and JC Chasez, Aguilera got her start on the Mickey Mouse Club, after losing a competition on Star Search. Little known fact: her first recording with with a Japanese singer named Keizo Nakanishi. Her first mainstream song in the US, was reflection, and from there her career took off. With the release of her second album, Stripped, Christina began to seem more like a strip-er despite her enormous talent. They outfits got risque, as did the lyrics. She even adopted the nickname xtina, tattooing it on the back of her neck. Tramp stamps and all, Christina is still an amazing singer, which is why I believe, she is one of the most revered of the pop 90's stars. As I was listening to her the past week, I noticed that a lot of her lyrics are very empowering for women, much like the lyrics of the Spice Girls were meant to be. Total, she recording six albums (including a Christmas album -which I own- and a Spanish album), and was nominated for 18 Grammy Awards. So yeah, Christina is cool in my book, and I think this has caused me to want to start listening to her even more...maybe I'll even buy Back to Basics...probably not.

Playlist
  1. Come on Over (All I Want is Youn)
  2. Reflection
  3. I Turn to You
  4. What a Girl Wants
  5. Can't Hold Us Down
  6. Fighter
  7. Beautiful
  8. The Voice Within
  9. Ain't No Other Man
  10. CandyMan
Instead of doing before and after pictures, I have decided to do before and after videos

Christina at nine (jesus!)

Unfortunately, I couldn't find the official Candyman video that I was allowed to embed so here's a live version. But I like the video so click here to check it out

90's Pop Week: Ricky Martin

For those of you who don't know, little Ricky Martin got his start in the Latin boy band, Menudo, at the age of twelve. Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, as Enrique Martin Morales, he adopted the stage name Ricky Martin at a young age. Instead of writing a bio on senior Martin, I have comprised a list of little known facts...

Little Known Facts:
  • For 6 months, he played Marius Pontmercy in Broadway's Les Miserables.
  • "Cup of Life" was chosen as the anthem of the '98 world cup (also a little known fact, I scored the winning goal for France in the '98 world cup- check wiki)
  • Livin La Vida Loca reached number one in 16 countries. The album was certified platinum x 7, selling over 17 million copies.
  • He is not gay, I quote, "I am a normal man. I love women and sex. I am a real hot-blooded Puerto Rican, but have never been attracted by sex with a man."
Note: not the gay pride parade
  • Despite his claim to be straight, he once danced with President Bush, during the 2001 inaugural ball.
  • He recorded 8 studio albums, two of which are named, Ricky Martin (weird, I thought he only had like 2)
  • He has a rose tattoo on his left hip ( see fact 4)
Playlist:
  1. The Cup of Life
  2. Livin La Vida Loca
  3. Shake Your Bon Bon
  4. Nobody Wants to be Lonely (Featuring Christina Aguilera)
  5. She's All I ever Had
  6. She Bangs (as made more famous by William Hung- I forgot Ricky even sang this)
Alright check this before and after:

90's Pop Week: 2Ge+her

I want to start off by saying, there are only seven days to 90's pop week. Obviously, I won't be featuring every 90's pop artist and I know that you will ask questions regarding the people I picked and why. So, I am going to put it like this. Whereas there are some acts that were huge and some that were small, I am only choosing the acts that I have the most to stay about. (Ali, I am apologizing in advance for the exclusion of you know who). Also, while a lot of these acts performed beyond the 90's I will be concentrating on their 90's years

For the first day of 90's pop week, the artist is 2Ge+her. For those of you who do not know 2ge+her, they were a 90's "TV band" on MTV. They episodes were fairly comedic (at the time anyway) and each episode featured one of their songs. At the conclusion of each of the two seasons, they released CD compilations of the songs that appeared at the end of each episode. Their self-titled debut was followed by the great, 2Ge+her again. I have both albums but 2Ge+her again is a true gem in pop history. The lyrics to every song are absolutely ridiculous yet infectiously catchy.

The death of the youngest member, QT caused the series to stop, and thus the "band" broke up. I remember being at a middle school dance when my friend told me that QT had died and I was so crushed that I left the dance. Born Michael Cuccione, QT died from cancer at age 16. Frequently absent from the show, the band joked that QT was touring the world talking to kids about cancer. But in reality, the show helped to raise awareness for cancer. Following Cuccione's death, the other members of the band Jerry 'The Heartthrob' O'Keefe (Evan Farmer), Chad 'The Shy One' Linus (Noah Bastian), Doug 'The Older Brother' Linus (Kevin Farley), and Mickey 'The Bad Boy' Parke (Alex Solowitz) held a special tribute in his remembrance.

Oxford Comma- Vampire Weekend

As stated earlier, I received the Vampire Weekend CD this week and it's amazing. I truly encourage you to go buy (not steal) this CD. I'm really not going to say much about the song. But give it a listen- and by the album...pretty simple.

ps: don't they sound so British?

Okay- off to see The Hustle tonight at WCL...better see you there!

Oh, also...guess what starts tomorrow?? 90's Pop Week!! (please don't lose respect for me)

WTF?!

I was browsing the internet early this morning because I was awakened by my neighbors failed attempt to do construction on their own house. Anyway, I came across this bizarre sight that actually connects musicians and groupies. Dangerous? You might think...and I have to agree with you. This sounds sketch..and like some hippies are up to no good (don't get me wrong, I love hippies...my best friend is a hippie)

So this website is called Better Than A Van and their page reads:

"Touring isn't cheap or easy. We know, we've done it for years. We thought of this as a way for bands and music lovers to offer up their floor and couches. We've stayed in some great and not so great places while on tour, so we know it can be hit or miss. We figure people are fans of bands and bands become fans of other bands. If we give them all a place to meet under a common need, good things will come of it."

There are a lot of things going on in my read after reading this but I'll keep my comments to myself, as you are probably thinking the same things. Anyway, at least check out the site...it's an interesting concept, just incredibly weird.
